Jean-Louis Mathieu Domaine Mathieu - Chalais
About the winery
Originally from Albinen, near Leukerbad, the Mathieu family has been cultivating vines for several decades. Imagine that in the past, one went from Leukerbad to Albinen using vertiginous ladders. It is with this same spirit and struggle that Jean-Louis Mathieu cultivates his vines and produces his wines today.
After a one-year traineeship in German-speaking Switzerland at the VOLG wine cellars, as well as studying oenology and winemaking in Changins, Jean-Louis Mathieu took over the family business in December 1994. This solid basic training is regularly supplemented by traineeships and visits abroad. Since 1995, an ambitious investment programme has been undertaken regularly in the vineyards and cellar. Today, the results are there, with national and international awards to honour them.
The estate is located between Sierre and Chalais on approximately 14 hectares, favouring integrated production with working methods that respect the environment. The cellar has a capacity of around 130,000 litres. Several wines complete their maturation in oak barrels. Modern equipment makes it possible to produce wines using oenological techniques that are constantly being updated.
