Mathier Franz-Josef - Salquenen
About the winery
In 1950, Franz-Josef Mathier began producing wine from his own vines and from grapes bought from other producers. He aimed to delight fans of Valais wine with typical, characterful wines. Thanks to an economic boom and the determined work of the entire family, these modest beginnings gave rise to a renowned winemaking and trading company.
After graduating from Wädenswil, Franz-Josef’s son André Mathier-Gsponer joined the family company in 1967 as a wine engineer. In 1974, the family business became a limited company and André took the helm in 1992.
Following the family tradition, his daughter Felizitas Mathier Benicchio, a qualified winegrower, has managed the company since 2006. Alongside her husband Andrea Benicchio, who graduated as a horticultural engineer, they strive to cultivate their land in harmony with nature using environmentally friendly methods, combining time-honoured know-how with modern techniques.
