Bourgeoisie de Grimentz - Grimentz

About the winery

The Vin du Glacier of the Val d’Anniviers, both mythical and rare, can trace its origins to the ancestral tradition of "remuage" (migration). It is aged in larch barrels in cool cellars, which are topped up according to their age each year. The oldest barrel has top priority, resulting in a blend of vintages. It is not unusual to sample Vin du Glacier which is over a century old, a testament to the exceptionality of this unique viticultural tradition in the Val d’Anniviers.

The principle of this wine called Vin du Glacier is simple : the barrels are never emptied. Every year new wine is added to the old. For instance :

> The wine in a barrel from 1888 will be blended with one from 1886
> Wine from 1934 will be added to the 1888 barrel
> Wine from 1969 will be used to fill up the 1934 barrel and will receive new wine

This wine is not available for sale. It can only be tasted in the cellars of Anniviers, drawn directly from the barrel. In the cellar of the House of the Bourgeoisie, there is the famous Bishop’s Barrel containing wine from 1886. Once offered only to the Bishop, nowdays it is served to VIP guests on special occasions.
