Cave des Bernunes - Nicolas Zufferey - Sierre
About the winery
Founded in 1987 in Chippis in Valais, "Les Bernunes" was, back then, a very small winery. The winemaking process took place in the basement of the family home. With great care and hard work on the vines, the estate grew and improved its quality over time. It was in 1994 that the Zufferey family eventually built a wine cellar. In 2013, extension work was carried out to build, amongst other things, a wine workshop, a barrel cellar, a reception area and a terrace with breathtaking views of the vineyards.
The environment, product and terroir remain constant priorities for all involved. Delivering the fullest expression of the Bernunes terroir is also highly important. The Zufferey family places quality at the heart of their work, and demonstrates this by offering a range of wines made exclusively from the Bernunes terroir.
They also adapt how they work the soil to suit each vine parcel. Many parcels are covered with grass to preserve biodiversity and soil structure. Horses work on certain parcels, providing working methods that are kinder to the soil.
Every year, new techniques are tested on a small portion of the harvest, but, on the whole, the winemaking process remains very traditional. The aim is to not alter the organoleptic quality of the wine and to respect the product. A small proportion of the wine is aged in oak barrels for two years.
