Domaine Claudy Clavien - Miège
About the winery
Miège is a small village halfway between Sierre and Crans-Montana. These vines, close to the mountain in an area called Coteaux-de-Sierre, are often considered as the south of Switzerland. Les Champs cellar, thus named because this is where the village’s wheat fields once flourished, and the Clavien family vines, are in this majestic setting.
Claudy has devoted a great deal of time to determining the suitability of each grape variety for its terroir. He also works on the balance of the plant in order to obtain the lowest yields, without excess energy, so as to optimise the concentration of the berry. This is reflected in the correct ripeness of the fruit, favouring both structure and freshness. With his daughter Shadia, they are moving towards grape cultivation even more in harmony with nature. Green-cover parcels today account for 60% of the domain. Intervention is minimised in order to respect the land, with the goal of one day having a completely green estate.
Claudy and Shadia are fond of textured and subtle wines. They use high quality barrels with very fine grain for this, adapted to each grape variety to gain great complexity in the wines and for an aging that is slow and promising. There is no room for compromise with aging in barrels, unlike traditional winemaking in stainless steel tanks. These are fully equipped with double jackets that allow individual temperature regulation, which preserves the intrinsic quality of each grape variety. It also makes it possible to adapt to the weather conditions of any given year.
